  • How Safe and Effective is Cod Fish Oil?
  •  supplementsThere's no doubt about it, fish oil can help to keep you healthy now and in the future. With so many different ones about, is cod fish oil or cod liver oil as it is better known, really a good choice?

You may have been given a spoonful as a kid and hated it, but there was a good intention behind it! The omega 3 fatty acids in the cod fish oil provides many benefits but because this type of oil comes from the liver, it makes it less beneficial than other types.

Why can cod fish oil be harmful?

The reason is because it contains high amounts of vitamin A, which can in large doses be toxic. This is the reason pregnant women and young children today are advised not to use it.

The truth is that we get vitamin A from many other sources and it can be relatively easy to get too much if you take cod liver oil too.

In addition, cod is generally caught in polluted waters and if not distilled, can contain many harmful toxins like mercury and arsenic which I will go into in the next section.

What's the best oil to use?

With so many other and more effective types around, it is better to avoid the cod liver oil altogether and look for other species like hoki and tuna where the oil does not come from the liver.

The hoki fish from the Southern Ocean of New Zealand results in one of the purest oils available. The oceans are still pristine and away from polluting shipping traffic and industry. This fish is also rich in the very best omega 3 fatty acids – DHA.

South Pacific tuna are also a good source of DHA but must be molecularly distilled first to remove the contaminants.

This distillation process is vital as many harmful toxins are stored in the flesh of the fish. Many companies skip this expensive step but put their profits above your health and future well-being.

By checking out the website or bottle label, you should be able to clearly see if they are distilled and also the DHA/EPA omega 3 levels. EPA is widely used still as the main one as it is cheaper to source and easier to use, but provides nowhere near as many health benefits.

Now you know why you should avoid cod fish oil and also the best type of supplement to look for, you can soon look forward to enjoying the maximum health benefits with none of the associated risks.

My family and I personally buy from a company in New Zealand which produces what I’ve found to be the highest-quality products.

    To your good health,

    Rich Hawkins
